Cambridge Audio S30 Speakers – Natural Oak

Overall rating:

The stylish and punchy S30 heralds Cambridge Audios loudspeaker revival. The R50 and R70 were highly regarded speakers in the 1970s and like its forbears, the new S30 offers excellent depth and soundstage yet extraordinary value for money.

Designed from the ground-up, the S30 is a delicately revealing speaker which is the perfect partner to Cambridge Audios array of electronics products, working particularly well with the mid range Azur series for the perfect budget package.

A 4.5 composite woven driver delivers a powerful yet controlled bass performance while offering extremely low distortion and excellent dispersion of higher frequencies.

This is matched to a soft-dome tweeter featuring a neodymium driver with a state-of-the-art motor system and a critically selected voice coil assembly.

By virtue of a purist mechanical design, a simple first order crossover is capable of perfectly controlling high and low frequency distribution. This custom designed component features audiophile grade polypropylene capacitors and enables the S30 to be bi-wired for greater bass control, crisper treble and improved detail.

The ported cabinet design is braced and stiffened for minimum movement and features a neat terminal panel with three-way gold plated bullet connectors.

Finished in natural oak, the S30 is supplied with a complementary grille.

Don’t let the size fool you, these are perhaps the best speakers for the price. Silky highs, and the bass is more than adequate for my listening room. Highly recommended.

I am completely blown away by these speakers. I was originally looking at tower speakers like the Infinity P362s, Polk Monitor series, etc. and these little guys sound better. The bass response is also simply amazing for speakers so small. Don’t be fooled by frequency response numbers listed for the various speakers you may be looking at, which is how I originally whittled down my choices. It’s like saying a Yugo could go 150MPH, possibly, but under very certain circumstances, down a hill, with the wind behind it, and, well we all know it isn’t the same as saying the same thing about a Ferrari….Well you get the idea, you have to look at frequency charts – not available for many models, suffice to say you have to know if you can actually hear the lower sounds that a speaker may be able to produce. As anyone will say best if you can actually audition the speakers you think you may like, with a favorite song for example. I was not able to do so for these but many other models in this price range, including tower speakers, and gambled and liked these the best – good luck finding anywhere that has them to listen to, I live in New York City, and couldn’t find anywhere. The construction of the cones, crossover, and cabinet is great. Speakers look great with or without the grills. Binding posts are excellent, dual post for bi-wiring if you desire.

Bit picky as to negatives, the speaker grills are flimsy, and thin fabric pulled very tight that I could see the corners wearing quickly. Its odd how they finished the veneer/wrap. They left a visible seam on the bottom, it is neat, but normally you can’t see the seam.

Also from others as I did extensive research you need to have these about 18″ from a wall – they are ported at the back. So you may want to keep that in mind if you are looking at these for a tight space.

*These are sold as a pair not singles, so keep that in mind when comparing prices.
