A 2.1 channel speaker system is very similar with a stereo speaker setup. However, in addition to such a setup, it has an added subwoofer. The larger subwoofer, which is dedicated for playing very low frequencies, usually compensates for the lack of deep bass on the satellite speakers. These are usually smaller units that have less punch in the lower spectrum of the frequency.
The fact that it is only a 2.1 setup, and usually the satellites are not so powerful, does not mean these are baby speakers and can’t get you quality sounds. In fact, many of these systems are able to reproduce 5.1 surround sound with a special decoder system that creates the illusion of a surround system setup. This is usually called virtual surround sound. A 2.1 channel speaker system equipped with such a technology can be used to play DVDs or BluRay movies and you’ll be amazed by how well it can imitate the real surround sound.
This kind of 2.1 channel system is very good for smaller spaces, where there is no room for the larger bulk of a full 5.1 channel system, or where it is impractical to have the clutter of the additional cables required by such a system.
