Barebone Speakers Reviews
Barebone speakers are just as the name says. What you buy is the actual speaker unit, without the acoustic chamber it is usually mounted in. That drives the price down and lets you install the speaker wherever you see fit.
Despite the fact that they are sold as individual units, and not packaged into a full blown speaker setup, these speakers are not to be considered low quality, or treated like a toy. They can package a considerable punch and become quite loud.
There are two kind of barebone speakers. Normal speakers, which are composed of a membrane that vibrates and the driver that makes it vibrate, and transducers, which cause the surface they are stuck on to vibrate (so they convert other surfaces into speakers, such as walls and windows). The normal speakers are of different kinds, classified by the frequency the can reproduce best. These are:
- tweeters, for high frequency sounds;
- medium frequency units, which sometimes, especially when they reproduce well low and high frequencies, are sold as full-range speakers
- subwoofers, which are specialized in reproducing the lowest frequencies.
The typical uses for these speakers are:
- build yourself a speaker by mounting a few barebones into an acoustic chamber. When doing so, you also include a frequency separation circuit, which feeds each speaker with the frequency it is designed to reproduce best;
- mount them in walls, when you think a do-it-yourself job is better (or more fun!) than buying a normal in-wall speaker;
- retrofit an older car;
- convert a window or a wall to a speaker using a transducer
