Entry level music joy
I have a sensitive ear and many “hifi” pieces have given me headaches. I sneer at some of the “favorites” out there. As my living accommodations had changed for a while and speakers tend not to get better in storage, I had sold my excellent Wharfedale Diamond Anniversaries, but now I missed them. Enter the Jamo c401! The new Diamonds are now a different speaker that tickle my ear only so-so, because of more bass I don’t care for, and are bigger as well. My next pick would have been the Epos ELS-3, because they do everything right. Look for ELS-3 reviews, there are plenty out there and they dusted every award in the HiFi world! The Epos model 3 are no longer available! These Jamo c401 speakers are very close to the Epos ELS3 though, so my problem is solved! They are clear and open, do not shriek, are well behaved, have a nice flat response and even work well on a vintage 5 Watt/Channel amp (yes, I am a high end and tube gear and vintage nut!). Hooked to my Marantz 4270 ([...]) they sing! A good tight bottom that will not rattle the walls, but everything is there and dry. Midrange is a little recessed compared to my single driver full range DIY set with 3 inch Tang Band drivers, but the TBs are famous for their midrange anyway, so I am spoiled there. Search for single driver speaker reviews and forums and you will understand the addiction they can cause as well as the price for specialty builds in the ten thousand dollar range if you cannot build stuff yourself!
The tweeter on this Jamo set is NEAT!
It delivers every bit of detail I have not heard since my Wharfedale Diamonds and they do it without the metallic harshness I had heard on some JBL speakers. Do yourself a favor and get them while you can! They sound better than Bose for sure at a fraction of the price. To get another idea, read this pro review of the old Diamond 7.2 at [...]
The Jamo C-401 is very close in character to these Diamonds, but without the occasional “forward” shout and shriek that is mentioned in the other review. The Jamo is actually a better behaved speaker and I no longer regret the loss of my Diamonds, as the Jamo is actually a step up AND I do not have to place them a meter away from the wall! The Jamos sound perfect inside of a book shelf, so they are better in every way!
At less than a hundred bucks you will have a tough time finding anything better out there for sure!
balanced sounding little speakers
The sound of speakers is very subjective. One reviewer describes them by saying they are “cheap” sounding and “not as good as” – what that means other than he didn’t like them, is anyone’s guess. My guess is this reviewer likes a “hotter” sounding speaker with accentuated bass and treble, but then again, that’s just a guess, so who really knows what he means.
I know I don’t like speakers that have accentuated highs or lows, because I find them unnatural and after the initial impression leaves you in 10 or 15 minutes, they just get on my nerves and are fatiguing to listen to.
I found these speakers to be accurate, which means they don’t have sizzling treble or pounding bass. However, the sound is balanced, reproducing the entire frequency range nicely with a little warmth to their sound. Bass is accurate and is not muddy. Though it may not go down to 20 or 30 hz, there is enough there to provide balanced sound in a smaller room.
I’d say they really are a bargain that is too good to be true & buy them if you like a speaker with more of a neutral sound.
Disappointing
These are just not very good speakers. I bought them for my office and i was going to replace a pair of Dayton B652 speakers which I bought here for $25.00. These speakers were not even as nice as the Daytons. They were flat with poor highs and seemingly no lows. They were really disappointing. I just use them for music through my Yamaha HTR-6130 receiver, which i only use in the 2 channel mode.It could be that they would have warmed up if I broke them in, but it is hard to imagine they would have improved that much. I was really hopeful when i bought these but sent them back. Vanns was really cool about the whole transaction. They seem a good organization.
Good looking, cheap sounding
These are great looking, very cheap sounding speakers. Someone on another site compared them to the AR2ax; I have the latter and believe me, there’s no comparison. They are also not even in the same league as the Polk Monitors that run $99/pair and aren’t much larger. Give these a miss and save yourself the shipping costs. Pretty but lousy.
Stunning little speakers!
Even though they are rated down to only 70 Hz, I swear that I could hear bass of much lower frequency. Maybe like 47 – 50 Hz. Right out of the box, these sounded very nice. I didn’t expect them to sound this good out of the box but they did! In my room (14 x 14 x 10) and for their small size, bass was quite unexpectedly tight and full for music. I could not believe a 4″ woofer could produce this much bass. However, for movies you may need a sub. The tweeters are the best part of these C401’s. Clean and smooth.
I just don’t know with mere $80 you could get anything this nice in this world! Even at $400 MSRP, they are still worth it.
I’m confident that you will love these little speakers.
Grab a pair now while they are still available.
Happy listening!
High End Sound but Low End Price
These have all of the quality of Jamo’s best speakers including the tweeter which is on their best. Right out of the box, the speakers sound very good. After 12 hours the bass is deeper and the midrange is clean and accurate. This is not a cheap surround speaker but a first class stand alone set, which is where I have mine, on my desk. However, two pairs of these and the 400CEN center speaker and you have a very high quality surround system for $240. Anybody in their right mind would buy at least a pair, but at this price maybe several pairs.
