hearing is believeing
I’ve been a musician nearly as long as I’ve been able to talk and that is coming close to 50 years…which I guess means that I have my opinions about things…and sometimes you get to a point where you might think you’ve seen or heard it all when it comes to audio
At any rate, a friend who is working closely with TBI put a pair of the Majestic Diamond I’s in my hands. Though he himself is not nearly as much of a sound nerd as I am, he raved about the sound and the new (nigh magical!) process that is employed to prevent feedback or distortions from these speakers. I was a little skeptical, but curious, to say the least. I tested them on my girlfriend’s modest stereo system. At first, I could NOT put my finger on it, but I KNEW there was something different in a big way about these speakers. Granted, with a 3.5″ driver I knew they could not deliver chest thumping bass, but they DID deliver very clear and suprising bass down to around 100hz…I’m sure the built in port helps! …and the other thing is that the driver simply cannot deliver the sizzle that is needed in the high end…but the performance of the mid range (vocals and where MOST of the “body” of music lives) was simply more clean and clear than any other speakers I’ve heard. One of the other subtle yet amazing things is just how good these speakers sound at LOW volume! …I mean, you *can* really push them, but at low volumes, they sound just as good. And…when you are pushing them to “music listening” levels, you do NOT really have to raise your voice or strain to hear conversation with someone. That’s just plain odd…but amazing!
I told my friend that I would like to meet with the TBI folks to discuss these things and try to get a better idea about what makes them do what they do. Later on that week, we did finally meet up and discuss. They nodded in confirmation as I brought up the shortcomings (lack of low end or hi frequency power…) and told me and showed me that those issues are being and have been addressed. I listened to various combinations of the TBI speaker line and I can tell you that it was an afternoon of the best music listening I have had in MANY years. We continued to have excellent conversation and I can tell you that TBI does know what they are talking about even if my glasses were not alway thick enough to understand all of the science that is involved. The proof is in hearing the speakers in action.
So- to be clear, I would not say that the Majestic Diamond I’s are a turnkey solution in and of themselves for *everyone’s* stereo needs, but if you were intending them for multimedia or gaming speakers for your laptop or desktop or as an easy solution to improve upon the sound of your flatscreen HDTV, they’re are GREAT and highly recommended!!!
I can easily recommend the Majestic Diamond II’s as a turnkey *two speaker* stereo solution…and if you can afford it contact TBI to purchase one of their subwoofers.
I’ve rambled on enough already, but I can tell you that I could go on and on about the subs, too!
Kudos, TBI!!!
