Bad idea to move from the X-Mini
Not as good as the smaller brother X-mini.
Less portable.
Does not come with the sound cord incorporated.
Not a very good bass.
It s just OK.
Not Bad..Not Great..Pretty Solid
I made the mistake of not doing enough research. I thought that these were bluetooth, but they werent. They go pretty loud to be so small. The sound quality is not bad at all. Not much bass but I wouldnt expect any for speakers this size. The bag is too small to put the speakers and chords in. I would give them a 7/10. Not bad for the price
Great for the size
Great sound for the size. Way better than my laptop’s speakers. Also nice for IPOD. Very good value for the money. Easy to put in a backpack or tote bag.
speakers
my review is based on poorly shipped speakers.
due to the poorly shipped speakers, these did not play well at all.
i have a mini max II and it is incredible but these capsule speakers
were unable to play and i blame it mainly on the shipping. hopefully
the company will see this and pay it some credibility.
Not quite there
Bought these since I had the X-Mini, which is still a great little speaker
but these dont’ have the same sound quality as their little red headed step-brother
plus they don’t have a volumbe control…
Packaged well, but ended up selling them quickly,

LOUD!
I work at a restaurant, and sometimes go to the kitchen, where we have a crappy CD boombox with no ipod input. I got this little guy so I could hook up my iPod and play my stuff rather than listening to the radio, which I hate. The sound is AWESOMELY loud. Loud and clear, because the audio is a lot more crisp than the crappy headphones I own. I love it. Also, I got my product extremely quickly, and packaged nicely.
Amazing
In the past, I’ve bought two different small travel speakers for my MacBook Pro and for my iPhone. Both times the sound was awful and the distortion horrible. So I am astounded at the difference with these X-Mini MAX IIs. I am not a sound aficionada but I am a classical musician and I believe classical music really puts a set of speakers to the test. I bought these speakers so I could play music and guided meditations for my classes and listen without the nuisance of wearing headphone or headsets, which can be painful after a while, as well as to have for travel. With these tiny speakers, I can hear the music and most of it sounds quite good. There has been only one cut of music that had some distortion at the loudest setting, but that might have been the recording. When I run these at maximum loudness, a few pieces of music sound a little bit harsh to me, but if I turn it down a tick, it is fine. The sound is, for most things, quite loud, full, clear, and can be sweet. It carries quite far in the house and even in the garden (unless there is traffic/airplane noise). If anything, I turn the volume down more often than I try to get it to get louder. I like the fact that the wire has a volume control on it.
A couple of things (not enough to lose a star):
The wire between the two speakers is a bit short.
The on-off button is a bit easy to turn on by mistake. One of the speakers was actually on when I removed it from the box!
It would be great to have a remote and/or a button to turn off the music, so I don’t have to turn on the iPhone to stop the music.
One Speaker Broken
These speakers are not as good as the original. I received one broken speaker that sounds like it is blown. Stick to the original xmini that speaker is impressive and has more bass.
Didn’t Impress Compared to a MacBook Pro
After reading glowing reviews online, and also from friends, I decided to pick up a pair of these speakers. Though I normally travel w/ a MacBook Pro, when I take a weekend trip, I’m now down to just an iPad, and I was thinking/hoping these would be a good set of speakers to toss in the bag and use as hotel room speakers. Given that, my benchmark in “portable speakers” is the sound quality coming from my late 2009 MacBook Pro (MBP).
Cons:
- sound doesn’t meet/exceed that from a MacBook Pro – simply put, I tried the speakers w/ iTunes on my MBP – and flipped the output from Mac to speakers and back. The Mac was much richer and fuller sounding that the X-Mini’s. The sound from them was good, but I wouldn’t classify it as great (again, using the MBP as the comparison point)
- blue LED’s done match – yes, this may sound silly, but the blue LED’s in the two speakers clearly came from 2 different sources – they are noticeably a different colour (yup, I’m a perfectionist)
- stereo only – this is minor, but I was hoping that I could grab just 1 of the 2 at times, but since it’s true stereo (unlike it’s little brother) you really need both for L&R channels
- cables – you’ll need to pack the special cable that it uses for audio since it layers the 3.5mm audio over the split mini-USB port
Pros:
- fantastic construction quality – the manufacturing is quite good
- volume – they get loud – louder than my MBP will go
- USB rechargeable – mentioned often, but great I need 1 charger for everything now
In hindsight, given their sound, I wish I would have purchased the original X-Mini II Capsule Speaker. Same sound quality, less volume, but smaller, more convenient package.
Excellent
These speakers are awesome. When my laptop speakers just aren’t loud enough. the Max II speakers get the job done.
My only minor issue with the speakers is that playing sound while charging them causes a little sound static. Thankfully, I charge the speakers so rarely that it is never an issue.
Highly recommended.
Nice Pair, now that they finally work . . .
The first pair I got of these, one of the speakers had strong constant feedback and the light was purple (blue and red at the same time; it should be either blue or red. It never charged, or worked well. So I ordered a second pair and listened to the one working speaker waiting for the second pair. When the new pair arrived I packed up the old one and popped open the new only to find that it had a defective cable, so I unpacked the first set, swiped the cable and sent back the bad speakers and the bad cable. Now that these two sets make one good set, well, I’m pretty happy.
I wanted to test the base so I dug through my music to find some hip hop (more difficult than you might imagine) and checked it out. Pretty good. It’s not exactly true sounding bass, but it is good and for tiny speakers, they give a good thump. Next on to Ella. Her voice rings through clear and the instruments are equally as clear and pretty crisp. Then I popped on Johnny Cash, Tennessee Flat Top Box. This song is split over the stereo channels: guitar on the right channel and rhythm on the left. I loved it! It sounded great! You can really pick up on the directionality designed into these. Pause. (Okay, I need to put this in perspective: I’ve been listening through my macbook pro speakers for two months.) Last I tried some classic rock and although not spectacular sounding, they hold up pretty good.
In general, i feel the sound is a little twangy with lots of treble, but what do you expect with itsy bitsy speakers. You can certainly pick up the rhythm section in songs well.
I purchased these for my computer, not to carry around. Honestly they don’t seem super durable. I would expect them to break within the year. Hopefully sitting on my desk most of the time, they will last a bit longer.
Sound Four stars, Quality two stars
I-pod speakers
Great little speakers
not real loud not much bass
but very nice for the size and price
super cool design (dont stick your finger in the top, thats were the speaker is, doh)
the speakers(there are actually two) magnet together (as shown in photos)or can be seperated up to 3 feet
charges in usb port
and holds charge for a very long time
Great for an I-Pod, I-Phone or even laptop
dont expect Bose sound, but does a great job for what it is!
wish it were wireless…
defective speaker – twice
I received these speakers in the box with broken seal and one of two speakers dead. I’m returning them. Ordered another set of them – and got exactly the same – box with the broken seal and one speaker dead! Are you kidding me??
The best of the little ones.
These are the best of the mini speakers I found for my iTouch and laptop – that’s my main usage. The next step up is the large docking stations but they are not great for travel. These are your travel speakers that can fit in a hat or backpack or just about anywhere but your shirt pocket. The design is great and very novel and easy to use. BTW, you will have to figure it out for yourself since the instructions are so small you will need a magnifying glass! What’s with that?
They plug in your USB port for recharging and I can’t really tell yet how long they run since it’s only been a week since receiving. Don’t forget to twist , a little extra force needed, the cases to get them to pop open and listen to a slightly better range of sound.
Amazing!!!
These little guys can really pump out some tunes. They are powerful and actually get some decent bass even though they’re so tiny. Battery life is awesome and the fact that they weigh less than my MotoDroid is absolutely incredible. If you’re in the market for some incredible little speakers these will do the job.
Music Anywhere
These little wonders delivers clear crisp music at a volume that means you can here them. ( I even have to turn them down to have a conversation )I bought them to play my Ipod Nano on my boat. I was looking for an alternative to my boom box and the space it took up, not to mention the cost of the batteries. I also purchased a griffin 12 volt usb charger to plug in and run off my boat batteries.
I am as happy as a little clam
Great set of speakers
The X-Mini Max II Capsule Speakers are great. I checked into many types of mini speakers. There were many reviews on these speakers, and I read a lot of them. Then, I saw there was a video, I watched it and coudn’t believe the sound of the speakers. I ordered them from Amazon, who gives great service, and free shipping.
Believe it – best speakers I own
I saw the C-Net review, and yup, these live up to it. I use these with my little tiny re-furbed 8gb fuze. The sound is broad, deep and very full. Lots of bass, treble and mid-tones. The sound fills the room. If you have concrete walls it will rock your space from end to end. Panel covered walls, about 3/4 the distance. Outside, these things are just amazing. They look cool, charge up quickly and use a standard mini-usb. You don’t have to use both at once, but you will want to because they are ‘real’ stereo as opposed to two speakers that just repeat the same sound. And they are very, very clear and sweet.
They weigh almost nothing and tuck up into an egg shape. The magnets that hold them together are very strong. I haul these around in my purse all day and they do not come apart. There is no storage compartment for the little charging cord (which also connects the speakers). The cord is about the size of a standard set of ear buds and wraps up nicely around the speakers if you want to do that. Keep it where you keep your ear buds.
There just is nothing else like these. The iHomes are clones of this design, more expensive, and they don’t have the bass these do. These are made in Singapore by Xmi Pte Ltd and assembled in China. The x-mini is their original design. I have seen these cloned a lot, but nothing sounds like these.
So for a small amount of money you can get a seriously cool set of speakers to carry around in your bag! I got rid of a logitech blade to get these. These are not quite as loud as the blade but it’s OK.
Special bonus – these come with an additional cord you can use to attach other X-minis to! You can make your own x-mini parade of dancing little egg things and put them anywhere. I am not sure if you improve the sound by doing that, but you certainly spread it around more. Plus it looks goofy. You can attach another set of these or up to (I think) 16 of the single x2s. They are the kind of thing you want to collect – they work, are really small, and are rechargeable so I can see this catching on.
The egg shaped ones are getting harder to find. I probably paid less for these than you will here on Amazon. When I shopped for prices I just went with an Amazon prime shipper because it worked out to be less. I did notice other places had sold out or were waiting on replenishment. So if you see them, grab them. If you don’t like it you can probably resell these for what you paid for them or possibly a little more if they stay popular. I think they will.
Wish there was a volume control
Already had X-Mini II speakers and read reviews on the X-Mini MAX II that spoke of an in-line volume control in the USB cable. Unfortunately these speakers do not have an on-board volume control like the X-Mini II nor does the cable include the USB cable with the volume control. As I have these speakers connected to a source without a volume control there is no control over the volume.
I love the speakers but I am very disappointed that this version does not include the USB cable with the volume control.
Just be forewarned, there are evidently at least 2 versions of the X-Mini Max II; one with a volume control in the cable and one without. This is the version without.
Great portable Speaker
The wife has an iPhone 3GS and she always wants to play music when she is on the treadmill or in the kitchen. I have an iPod dock on our home theater system (Denon); but, the pin-outs are different from our 1st gen iPod touch compared to the iPhone and it does not work with the home system. The iPhone speakers are just too small to fill a room. The mini-max II looked like a good solution and she is very happy with the portability and sound of the speakers.
Pros:
- Very good sound
- USB rechargeable
- Small size, very portable
- Very cool design
Cons:
- Only A-OK bass
- A little expensive for the size, you can get a Logitech PC system with subwoofer for same $$ or less
- For the $$, the speakers should be Bluetooth
- Don’t know how long the rechargeable batteries will last, usually 2 years seems about the average for most products this size (cell phones, ipods, game controllers, etc..)
